Superior Genetics

We are constantly infusing superior genetics in an attempt to make genetic gain and consolidate structural soundness and breed type. With a focus on breeding sires which are suited to both the domestic and export market we possess a range of sheep to suit all needs.

We have been involved in the White Suffolk Superwhites program since its inception in 1996 and have been making rapid genetic gains for over 20 years now.

Performance Recording

Ashmore have been performance recording with Lambplan since 1993 and we have maintained GOLD data quality throughout that time which ensures that our ASBVs are accurate and reliable.

The basis of our performance recording is the collection of weight data at birth, weaning (100 days) and post weaning (200 days) as well as post weaning fat, eye muscle depth and worm egg count. Subsequently we have adopted the Lamb 2020 index as we feel this holds more relevance to the prime lamb industry.

Sound Breeding Objectives

Our breeding objectives are focused around producing functional terminal sires which perform in a range of environments. With a goal of breeding rams suited to satisfying both the domestic and export markets we possess a range of sheep to suit all needs.

The main objectives in our breeding program are rapid growth, optimal finish, high meat yields and high carcase value. Consequently, we measure weight, fat and muscle depth at 200 days of age as we feel that testing at this age holds most relevance for the prime lamb breeder.

Objective     Trait Measured
Rapid Growth   Weight
Adequate Finish Fat Depth
High Meat Yield, High Value Carcases Fat and Muscle Depth
Parasite Resistance Worm Egg Count

Disease Free Status.

We are an Ovine Brucellosis Accreditated Free stud as well as attaining MN3 status in the Ovine Johnes Disease Market Assurance Program (OJD MAP).

Our property and our sheep are foot rot free and we treat all stock annually for lice and other external parasites. A routine 5 in 1 vaccination program is also administered.

Industry Involvement

We are actively involved in a number of progressive industry groups, including the Australian White Suffolk Association which comprises a forward thinking, highly motivated group of breeders.

In addition, we have been involved Superwhites which is aimed at rapid genetic gain and improving genetic links between participant flocks. This group also aims to identify superior rams that specifically suit the domestic or export markets, and hence adopt a more focused approach to meeting the needs of our clients.

Shows and Sales

In an attempt to promote the stud we have been very active at both field days and shows. This has been highly successful with a number of major prizes awarded at country and interstate shows, most recent was winning the prestigious LAMBPLAN Production Class at the 2008 Adelaide Royal.

Stud sheep have been sold to five states demonstrating widespread acceptance from breeders both locally and interstate. For further details on sales where Ashmore sheep are sold contant Brian on 0428 826568 or click here.
