2009 – Ashmore Genetics rise to the top of the White Suffolk Breed

Ashmore 060263 is the highest progeny tested ram in the White Suffolk breed on the LAMB 2020 index (116 points). Ashmore 080185 is the highest ram lamb in the White Suffolk breed on the LAMB 2020 index (116 points). This is testament to our breeding program which is focused on early growth, optimal finish, high meat yield and parasite resistance which exist in both these rams. Figures current as of 1 January 2009.

2008 - Fourth Generation Fischer returns to SA to take up ram breeding operation

Youngest son Troy and his wife Nette have now returned to SA and are living on the farm and heavily involved in the ram breeding operation. On September 18, 2008, Isabelle, their gorgeous baby girl arrived. Modest birth weight and early indications suggest she takes after her mum and dad in terms of height – consistent breeding!
The Fischer Family has been farming in the district for almost a century and with the fifth generation have recently arrived the outlook for Ashmore White Suffolks is promising.

2007 - Ashmore 050131 selected for world's largest genetics trial

The Australian Sheep Industry CRC is running a trial over the next 7 years involving 5,000 ewes joined to 100 of the nations most influential sires to investigate which DNA markers affect traits of importance. The outcomes of this trial will enhance ASBVs in the future through provision of information from DNA testing. See article for more details.

2005 - White Suffolk Trial

PIRD trial demonstrates better ASBVs = higher value lambs. See full report for more details.

Recent Research Outcomes

A recent trial run by the Australian White Suffolk Association investigated the merit of estimated breeding values (EBVs) as useful tools for increasing the value of prime lambs produced. Fifteen leading sires were chosen from industry each with extreme EBVs for traits of interest (growth, muscling, leanness) and mated to 30 commercial Merino ewes each, with the progeny grown out to an average of 51kg prior to slaughter. Carcases were boned-out to determine the weight of each of the primal cuts. The carcase value was then determined using the retail value for each primal highlighting significant dollar differences in retail value between progeny of the best and the worst sires.

The relationship between eye muscle and loin primals This figure depicts a strong positive relationship between yearling Eye Muscle Depth EBV and 300-day loin weight with loin weight increasing linearly with EBV. This suggests that using rams with high EMD EBVs will produce lambs with heavier loins, which ultimately results in higher value carcases. Using a retail price of $35 per kilogram of loin, at a constant carcase weight, this equates to $5.25 difference between the progeny of the best and worst ram used in the trial just in this primal. Similarly strong relationships were seen between yearling EMD EBV and the French rack and tenderloin primals.

Selecting rams with positive EMD EBVs results in more weight in the high value cuts .

2003 - Ashmore wins Reserve Champion Ram at Sydney Royal.

2003 - Ashmore chosen for superior genetics trial Ashmore 000050 has been chosen for White Suffolk Association Research Trial. This project will attempt to measure the benefits of superior genetics to the prime lamb producer. The trial looks at growth and maturity patterns of outstanding White Suffolk sires as well as financial benefits from high vs. low performance Lambplan sires.

2002 - Lambplan Award Ashmore received the Lambplan encouragement award for achieving the most genetic gain of any White Suffolk stud in the breed!
Ashmore also achieved the highest genetic gain of any stud across all terminal sire breeds - an increase of 22 index points on Carcase plus for the 2001 drop - quite an accomplishment!
Watch out for progeny of these sires in the coming sale season.
